Scientific discovery rarely follows a straight line.
New evidence appears. Promising ideas can surface in the middle of existing projects – long before traditional funding models are ready to respond.
Some of the most important advances begin as small signals buried inside larger projects.
The Ignition Fund helps promising research find grip at the right moment.
RESPONSIVE AND AGILE
The Ignition Fund provides flexible grants of up to £100,000 to help scientists seize new opportunities and ensure promising ideas aren’t left behind.
That might mean testing an unexpected finding or generating the evidence needed to explore it further.
The fund supports research that could reshape understanding of dementia prevention, diagnosis, treatment and the biology of disease – including early-stage work that may struggle to attract conventional funding.
In research, timing matters. Momentum matters too.
IGNITION FUND IN ACTION
Dr Gaynor Smith
Investigating the role of the WWOX gene in Alzheimer’s disease using fruit fly models, exploring whether the gene helps protect brain cells from inflammation and degeneration.
Dr Yazead Buhidma
Studying how immune cells behave in Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration and whether viral infection may contribute to disease progression.
Dr David Koss
Investigating genetic damage in Dementia with Lewy Bodies and how these changes contribute to neurodegeneration.
Dr Cara Croft
Exploring how toxic proteins spread through the brain in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, combining brain imaging with data analysis techniques developed alongside McLaren Racing’s data science team.
