Professor Tara Spires-Jones joins the charity’s scientific advisory board.
Professor Tara Spires-Jones has dedicated her research career to uncovering the mechanisms that underpin diseases causing dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases. Her research group, based at the Centre for Discovery Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh – where she is deputy director – investigates why brain cells and their connections malfunction and deteriorate in disease.
Tara has done important work in discovering the several forms of proteins that contribute to the deterioration of the connections between brain cells. This was made possible by her pioneering work in developing imaging techniques.
Tara is also President of the British Neuroscience Association and sits on the advisory board of Alzheimer’s Research UK. She has supported Race Against Dementia for some time – speaking at the charity’s forum at Silverstone Museum in July 2023 about the global state of dementia research, and more recently presenting at a fundraising event hosted by the John Clark Motor Group.
I am honoured to join as a scientific advisor
‘I have followed Race Against Dementia for several years and been lucky enough to meet and work with some of the truly brilliant researchers funded by the charity. For the past two years, I’ve attended the Summer School which was a unique opportunity to learn more about the Formula 1 mindset and how we as scientists can incorporate these ideas to help us on the way to breakthroughs. Now I am honoured to join as a scientific advisor and use my skills to guide the next generation of research leaders, fostering passion and innovation to drive progress in dementia research’. – Professor Tara Spires-Jones
Professor Spires-Jones joins the scientific advisory board alongside Professor Philip Scheltens and Professor Siddharthan Chandran. Their role is to support Race Against Dementia select research projects, support the training and career development of Fellows and represent the charity at events.
With more than 150 published papers, Tara brings expertise in neuroscience, science communications and all aspects of undertaking research.
Her passion for championing the development of early career researchers makes her a natural fit for the appointment.
