Big news! Mark Stewart, the youngest son of racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart, has taken over in the role of Chair of the Trustees here at Race Against Dementia. The baton has been passed from father to son and highlights a significant step in our determination to find a cure for dementia.
For Mark, this journey is deeply personal. From memories of his mother’s love for telling her favourite stories, like the day Mark was born when “there was a storm and a tree had fallen on the road and they had to climb over the tree to get to hospital,” to those very stories fading as Lady Stewart’s dementia has progressed over the years.
I don’t live here. This is not my house.
“She’ll look around and say, ‘I don’t live here. This is not my house.’ You’ll see in her eyes when she spots family in all the photographs that are there but she’ll still say, ‘Are you going to drop me off at home?’”
Mark is passionate about finding a cure for dementia because he knows first-hand, along with his brother Paul and father, how dementia can slowly take away who a loved one really is.
Soon after Lady Stewart was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2014, it drove the Stewart family to find a cure for this disease that affects more than 55 million people around the world
Mark’s involvement in the charity started in the role of an ambassador when Race Against Dementia was set up by Sir Jackie Stewart in 2016. Mark’s efforts in forging partnerships, fundraising and enhancing the charity’s visibility have been instrumental in the charity’s growth. His background in sports marketing and film production have also brought a unique skill set to drive our mission forward.
With Mark at the helm, Race Against Dementia embarks on a new chapter. His personal connection inspires hope as our groundbreaking researchers relentlessly strive to discover a cure and advance treatments to beat dementia.
