Business owner Neil Glover and professional mountaineer Jason Black had a dream to row across the Atlantic Ocean.
A journey of 5,000 km
After five years of planning and training, Destiny’s Tide set sail.
On January 3rd2024, Jason and Neil embarked on a mission to Row across the Atlantic from Lanzarote to Antigua – raising funds to accelerate preventions and cures for dementia.
We were on a nine-metre boat, but never felt alone. You were pulling the oars with us.
On January 19th (17 days into the Row) Mother Nature showed her might with a storm which Jason and Neil battled for three days.
Jason said, “That looks like two tornadoes and they are both heading our way.”
Neil said the storm created “waves the size of buildings”, subsequently tearing off the rudder, damaging the hull and daggerboard on Destiny’s Tide.
The damage to their boat forced Jason and Neil to put out a distress call that was answered by Lagoa.
A large container ship, Lagoa covered 700 km to rescue Jason and Neil. They were then taken back/transported safely to Portugal and will be forever grateful to her heroic crew.
The Race Against Dementia team are so disappointed that after all the preparation, training and hardship Neil and Jason didn’t get to finish their ‘dash’ this time – but what an amazing achievement for them both.
They have raised an incredible £102,687 and given us all hope that a cure will be found.
Neil said, “we are so close.”
After returning to land, Jason said, “No such thing as failure, just setbacks, we march forward in the Race Against Dementia. The race hasn’t finished, we encourage you to take the baton.”
We were on a nine-metre boat, but never felt alone. You were pulling the oars with us.
Alongside Jason and Neil’s determination, this expedition was made possible by the support of incredible businesses, believing in the urgent need to win race against dementia:
