There are lots of ways that community groups can help and we are hugely grateful to the clubs and societies which have already organised events to support RAD.
If you are a member of a group or club and would like to get involved with RAD, then please get in touch via fundraising@raceagainstdementia.com – we look forward to hearing from you.
Can you organise a local car or doggy wash or would you like to host a coffee and cake morning with your book group? We welcome smaller groups of people fundraising – if you have an idea and would like to talk it through, then please get in touch.
Will you be your golf club’s next Captain and are you looking for a charity to support? We can provide materials that will help to promote RAD as your Charity of the Year and encourage other members to get involved.
Is your bowls club looking to support a charity with some fundraising? Or perhaps your tennis club would like to host an event to raise money for RAD. There are lots of ideas for one-off events as well as for those that last across the year.
If you would like to speak to someone about your plans, or to hear more about the work RAD is doing, please get in touch.
With more than 55 million people worldwide living with dementia and over 500,000 people registered as carers for those with dementia in the UK, many students in schools, colleges and universities are likely to have been affected by dementia in some way.
We are happy to provide materials, including posters and certificates to help support your fundraising. Please get in touch.
“With grandparents who died from vascular dementia, and inspired by Sir Jackie’s creation of Race Against Dementia, I was strongly motivated to do something. Tennis is well known for its physical and social benefits, but its impact on healthy cognitive ageing is under-reported. I had become aware of research promoting tennis as a means of improving memory and slowing mental decline.
I founded Tennis4RAD, a tennis programme for people aged 50 and upwards to help reduce participants’ chances of developing dementia, in partnership with Tennis Scotland. Physical inactivity is one of the key lifestyle risk factors for developing dementia, so the programme is designed to get participants thinking, moving and problem solving on court through a range of tennis exercises, drills, and games. Above all, it is designed to be socially interactive and fun, and keep participants’ minds and bodies active. After an initial 10-week programme with 16 participants at one venue, we’ve now repeated the programme three times, and are working with Tennis Scotland to roll out the programme at club venues across Scotland during 2023. I want more people to access the programme to benefit their cognitive ageing; and I also would like to raise more funds in support of RAD.”
