WE APPLY A FORMULA 1 MINDSET TO BEAT DEMENTIA

A Formula 1 team focuses on achieving success through collaboration, ingenuity and a relentless pursuit of excellence. We are inspired by this approach and believe it can deliver results in the laboratory, as well as on the racetrack. Together, we guide dementia researchers to follow the Formula 1 mindset – sharing practices, technologies, ideas and attitudes.

Race Against Dementia is an official charitable partner of Formula 1, providing a global platform to raise awareness and funds for dementia research.

Help us in the race against dementia

Raise money for much needed research and help us to beat dementia by joining the Race.

In RAD funded dementia research projects, laboratory technicians, PhD and Masters students and post-doctoral researchers pull together, following the vision and leadership of a Principal Investigator.

In Formula 1, success depends on the collaboration and coordination of every member of the team – drivers to engineers to mechanics and support staff. A winning team is characterised by a culture of teamwork and mutual respect. Everyone applies their individual expertise towards a common goal.

In Race Against Dementia funded dementia research projects, laboratory technicians, PhD and Masters students and post-doctoral researchers pull together, following the vision of a lead researcher. Race Against Dementia training develops high potential research talents, helping these emerging leaders create a disciplined framework and shared sense of purpose around their research projects. More broadly, our network enables research teams to move faster, tapping into expert advice without hindrance.

Innovation leads to competitive advantage. Teams constantly test the boundaries of what is possible, experimenting with new technologies and ideas to gain an edge. Improving and evolving – always. Never satisfied. Constantly identifying ways to be faster, more efficient and more competitive. Through car design, training and preparation, teams always push to be the best they can be.

Race Against Dementia funding runs for five years rather than the usual three. This means this means there is more scope for flexibility and experimentation. Race Against Dementia is nimble, making its funding decisions quickly, allowing our researchers to concentrate on the number one priority – research. We encourage collaboration – both with other Race Against Dementia researchers and broader industry. We partner with inspirational thinkers and talent from the motorsport, automotive, private equity, bioscience and high technology industries.

Formula 1 requires resilience – the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Successful teams stay focused and motivated, even in the face of adversity. Their mistakes become the fuel for future success.

Dementia research is a rain drenched race rather than sprint qualifying. Today there is no cure. While we want the breakthrough to happen fast, it is likely to require time. But this is a fight that can be won. We keep our researchers motivated and we guide them as they scale up their research programmes – more funding, growing teams, more exposure. Race Against Dementia provides a platform to give dementia researchers the confidence they need to accelerate their research.

Every detail matters in Formula 1. From car design to race strategy, successful teams leave nothing to chance, paying meticulous attention to every aspect of their performance – and how to sharpen it.

Scientific research is all about detail too. Establishing the patterns and identifying the variables. Iterative change. We want pace, but only with precision. Inventive, but controlled. To perform at their best, we help our research scientists understand and adapt their lifestyle habits (nutrition, exercise and sleep). All to help them achieve – and stretch – their ambitions.

Scientific research is all about detail
