Race Against Dementia Annual update: 21st October 2021

Posted on the 4th November 2021

In the presence of its new Royal Patron, HRH The Countess of Wessex, Race Against Dementia welcomed its principal supporters, RAD Fellows, Scientific Advisors, Trustees and Ambassadors to the Royal Automobile Club.

Sir Jackie explained that RAD has achieved a great deal since launching its Fellowship Programme two years ago-there are now ten RAD Fellows spread across the globe.  RAD’s mission of instilling a new approach to dementia research is being demonstrated through its partnerships with industry, as well through the RAD Leadership Development Programme.

RAD needs to keep building on these foundations to catalyse a change in the approach to research in order to find a prevention or cure for dementia – a disease which, as Sir Jackie and his family know only too well, has devastating consequences.

Sir Jackie also talked about the need to look at a different way of undertaking dementia research.  Three of the RAD Fellows, Dr Cara Croft, Dr Christy Hung and Dr Claire Durrant provided updates on their innovative research projects and each of them spoke passionately about the benefits of the RAD Leadership Development Programme which is designed to encourage an ‘F1 attitude ‘ into dementia research.

RADs Scientific Advisors, Prof Philip Scheltens and Prof Siddharthan Chandran gave a presentation on a new RAD investment, the RAD Discovery Hub, aimed at creating multi-institutional collaboration to enhance and accelerate processes within dementia research, initially looking at efficiencies and timescales of drug trials.

Sir Jackie extended his particular thanks to all the RADs supporters present as well as the Chairman and the principals of the RAC, for allowing RAD to use the RAC premises on a complimentary basis. He also thanked Moët & Chandon for generously providing the excellent champagne, wines and digestifs, which would be served during the evening.
