HRH The Countess of Wessex becomes Royal Patron of Race Against Dementia

Posted on the 21st October 2021

Race Against Dementia is delighted to announce that HRH The Countess of Wessex will become Royal Patron from 21st October 2021.

Sir Jackie Stewart OBE, the Chair of the Trustees said: “I am so pleased that The Countess of Wessex has become the Royal Patron of Race Against Dementia.  RAD is a relatively young and small charity but the research we support is of huge importance across the world.  Unless a cure for dementia is found, one in three people born today will die with the disease – a devastating prospect for all families, like my family, affected by the disease.

Our aim is to fund pioneering research into the prevention and cure of dementia.  The Race Against Dementia Fellowship Programme draws from the most promising scientific talent around the world.  RAD supports a number of early career scientists aiming to catalyse their research by driving a shift in culture that is informed by the innovation in high technology, engineering research and implementation used in Formula 1.  RAD’s objective is to drive collaboration across disciplines and institutions to help fast-track progress.

Having The Countess on our team is an important step for RAD.  I know that Her Royal Highness is committed to helping us to create greater awareness of the threats created by this terrible disease and to support the hugely important research that we back.

Working to fund a cure for dementia is one of the greatest challenges I have ever faced.”

Race Against Dementia Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex

A full-time working member of the Royal Family, The Countess of Wessex splits her time between her work in support of The Queen and visits to a large number of her own charities and organisations. She has a wide range of interests which include supporting children and young people in need of additional care, supporting people with disabilities, the elimination of avoidable blindness and championing the sight loss community, agriculture, fashion and gender equality.

Much of the day-to-day working life of The Countess is taken up with her roles as Patron of over 70 charities and organisations. Each year, Her Royal Highness undertakes hundreds of visits to schools, hospitals, military bases and charity headquarters in order to learn more about their work, and to highlight it to the wider world.
