RAD supports the 2021 Dementia Research Careers Festival

Race Against Dementia have been proud to support and delighted to be involved in the first Dementia Research Careers Festival.

The festival is running from the 1st to 6th of March 2021 during National Careers Week, and includes events, live webinars, blogs, articles and support for undergraduates and young-people who are exploring how their talents could help beat dementia. The website has been curated to provide an enormous amount of information and a one stop shop for anyone considering a career in dementia research.

Showcasing careers in dementia research relating to, amongst other areas art, innovation, technology, psychology and healthcare, and of course careers in the lab, the festival has demonstrated the range of passions and expertise that can contribute to beating dementia.

The event has been hosted and created by by Adam Smith, Programme Director at  Dementia Researcher, part of the Office of the NIHR National Director for Dementia Research based at UCL.

Who are Dementia Researcher?

Dementia Researcher through the website and companion podcast aims to provide information and support for Early Career Dementia Researchers (ECRs), based within the UK and across the world. It consolidates listings of available funding opportunities, jobs and events and shares relevant science, careers and research content from other sources. The team behind the website also bring together ECRs to share their own thoughts on career topics and research in the form of blogs, webinars and a regular fortnightly podcast, as well as hosting a support community and regular social networking events. The service continues to expand and has sought out opportunities to collaborate with other institutions from across the world to expand its offering.


Race Against Dementia, alongside NIHR Dementia Researcher, Alzheimer's Society, Alzheimer's Research UK, Race Against Dementia, Dementias Platform UK and the Dementia Research Institute are working together to encourage young-people and undergraduates to consider a future in dementia research.

RAD CEO, Dr Penny Moyle, hosted a webinar showcasing careers in dementia research relating to technology, data and innovation.

Speakers, who shared their backgrounds and routes into dementia research, their work and how they apply their skills and knowledge to dementia research were:

-Dr Sarah Marzi, Edmond and Lily Safra Research Fellow, a mathematician and psychologist by training, now running her own lab at Imperial College London and the UK DRI.

-Matt Harrison, Senior Design Associate at the Helix Centre at Imperial College London.

-Riona McArdle, Postdoctoral Research Associate at Newcastle University working with the Brain and Movement Research Group and the Global Health Research Group for Dementia Prevention and Enhanced Care.

RAD-DARF Fellow, Dr Kunle Bademosi, is featured in a blog highlighting that “Dementia Research is for Everyone”. The blog introduces seven researchers from five diverse backgrounds.
