The ‘Race Against Dementia – Dementia Australia Research Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship’ programme

Posted on the 7th July 2020

Race Against Dementia (RAD) are proud to announce a new collaboration and partnership with the Dementia Australia Research Foundation through the launch of a new research fellowship.

Sir Jackie was appointed an Honourary International Dementia Australia Ambassador last March, and he was due to announce this extension of RAD’s international Fellowship Programme in Melbourne at the RAD Gala 80th Birthday Dinner arranged by Craig Joel, which sadly had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The 2020 Gala was clearly not meant to be, but behind the scenes, RAD and Dementia Australia have been working through the details.

The Race Against Dementia – Dementia Australia Research Foundation Post-doctoral Fellowship programme will support two early career researchers in the field of dementia prevention or treatment. $405,000 will be awarded to each fellow to support biomedical, clinical or psychosocial areas of dementia research.

Race Against Dementia is committed to funding dementia research globally, with a focus on early career scientists.  Our goal is to secure new talent in the field of dementia research, and to fast-track their careers to become leaders in the field.

“A key priority for Race Against Dementia is to form strong alliances with research centres of excellence globally and by establishing this fellowship we recognise Australia among this group and hope to attract the best and brightest researchers in this field.” Sir Jackie Stewart

Professor Graeme Samuel AC, Chair of Dementia Australia, said “ We too acknowledge Mr Joel for his enthusiasm and generosity of time and spirit to help to make this a programme a reality, and we are absolutely delighted to launch the fellowship powered by Sir Jackie’s vision and commitment to dementia research. With the number of Australians living with dementia expected to increase to almost 1.1 million by 2058, research into dementia is now more urgent than ever. By supporting up-and-coming researchers, we will be able to target the brightest new minds whilst at a critical crossroads for choosing a research path.

Fellowship applications open from 8th July and close on 21 August 2020 with the grant recipients to be announced in January 2021.
